Junior High English and 7th Grade World History
English
Both grades follow the California State standards for Literature and Writing.
In Seventh grade students read a variety of short stories to learn literary elements. IN writing, students are taught how to write a five paragraph informational essay, a research paper, literary summaries, and autobiographical narratives. Greek and Latin roots are emphasized during vocabulary/spelling instruction and grammar is reviewed throughout the year.
In 8th grade writing includes research papers, persuasive essays, an autobiography and biographical narratives, as well as poetry. Students learn how to refine their writing by eliminating pronouns and dead words. Vocabulary comes from short stories and novels read in class. Students use literary knowledge gained during seventh grade to begin analyzing literature as an 8th grader. The 8th graders read several historical fiction novels to support the American History curriculum.
7th Grade World History
World history instruction is based on the California state standards. Students begin studying World history from the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D. and end the year looking at the Age of Exploration and the colony formed at Jamestown. Units of study include Islamic Empire, West African Kingdoms, China’s Golden Age, Japan, The Middle Ages in Europe, and the Maya, Aztec, and Incan civilizations.
